Best Free Mobile Travel Apps 2013

Mobile Travel App Guide 2013

Powered by ITB, the 2013 edition of the Mobile Travel App Guide lists near 125 applications in 25 different categories. There’s such a massive amount of them – around 36.000 at the moment – that a selection has to be made to take advantage and get to know the best ones.

Not huge fans of Mobile Apps in the beginning, we reckon there has been an enormous improvement throughout last 2 years. This is our little contribution, a reminder of which ones were ruling in February and March 2013. Not an evergreen info, this list should be updated almost every month! Here’s our review and please, take into account that all the selected ones are FREE!

ITB’s Selection of Best Travel Apps in 2013

Airport Travel App

GateGuru. The only one that provides all the info you need to manage your entire day-of travel from your mobile devices.

Car Rental Travel App

Sixt Rent a Car. Although we avoid to list businesses, we like the budget prices of the company overall and the suitability for all platforms except Symbian.

Cruise Travel App

Cruise Finder. It provides detailed cruise info on 20 different lines and 12000+ itineraries complete with route maps.

Destination Country Travel App

Amazing Thailand did a good job with its design and Explore Canada like a local gives you real insights from locals (just Android and iPhone). Top 100 Germany used more than 5500 visitors to rate their favorite German attractions and places.

Flight Tracking Travel App

While App in the Air features useful tools to find the best food in the airport, where to connect to free wi-fi and the best ways to spend free time; you can also share your flight status to keep your folks updated.

Global Distribution System Travel App

CheckMyTrip Premium Amadeus offers business and frequent travelers all relevant travel info within one App; TripCase Sabre stores all the travel details in one master itinerary Agenda and ViewTrip Mobile is kinda the same thing but also includes city guides, maps, directions, local weather and events! (iPhone and Android only).

Hotel Portal Travel App

Booking.com is one of the most complete ones with more than 265000+ properties listed; ebookers Hotels allows you to save up to 65% with exclusive deals and Jetsetter does so up to 60%.

Itinerary Management Travel App

Travelload Reiseplanner has a great calendar view where you get directions based on departure or arrival time together with flight delays in real-time; TripIt would be also a good option as a travel organizer (usable in all Platforms except for Symbian) and it even displays a Point Tracker! and Wipolo uses the info you have before forwarded to their robots to extract the useful data and create your trip itinerary.

Last-Minute Hotel Booking Travel App

Hotel Tonight will let you make a booking for up to 70% off. They offer as well a promo code for $25 off your 1st booking: TONIGHT.

Location Based Service Travel App

GuidiGO (only iPhone) allows to download guided tours created by local experts which you can follow at your own pace. And Wikitude sounds really futuristic connectiing you with the world around in a completely new way – by using the camera and engaging with your surroundings (all Platforms but Mobile Browser).

Map and Navigation Travel App

MapsWithMe Lite sounds really good since features all countries totally offline!

Meta Search Travel App

Hipmunk Flight & Hotel Search introduces the “agony” concept for a high standard experience where quality is more important than price. Skyscanner has been one of our favorites for a long time (all platforms except for Symbian) and Trivago – The hotel search same thing (unluckily only for iPad and iPhone).

Online Travel Agency App

We would give a try to “Try Name Your Own Price” or “Express Deals” features of Priceline.

Taxi Travel App

Taxi Magic sounds lovely cheap since no phone call is needed to book a taxi.

Train Travel App

DB Navigator provides access to the timetables of more than 250000 stops and stations in Germany and Europe!

Travel Expenses App

We have not found big differences between Concur, Expense Reports and MobileXpense but we do find them really useful; allowing to track expenses and upload receipts.

Travel Guide App

Working offline, TouristEye is unbeatable. Taking city guides to the next level, we would recommend Unlike City Guide that connects coolhunters from around the world with unique, essential and inspiring places.

Travel Security App

Fit for Travel shows to be the most complete at the moment allowing you to search for destinations, disease news and doctors and providing useful info about country risk, diseases, necessity of vaccination and safety tips (adrenaline-seeker? maybe you should download Rescue Kit, not free but worth a try!)

Thanks for the list. I have been using my work cellphone for years and I’ve never been able to install any apps due to our IT’s security setup. I’m finally I’m getting my own personal phone and will be able to try some of these out.

Booking.com is good for hotels. However, why resrict your search to only the deals on this site. The app (and website) at BestTravelCoupon searches Booking and 100+ other sites.

The site & app works too. Based on head-to-head rate comparisons, its rated the #1 “Travel Search Engine” from Travel-Search-Engines
